When you are charged, the seemingly limitless power and resources of the state are pit against you. Many accuseds feel powerless; overwhelmed. Most accuseds quickly realize that they are in over their head. In theory, laws are drafted simply. In reality, the law is inordinately complex. Every law has exceptions, and every exception has yet more exceptions.
